What motivated the four Gospel writers?

God chose people who were guided by the Holy Spirit to teach the “truths he wanted taught” using their own knowledge, vocabulary, and literary skills. The authors of the Gospels were influenced by their time and culture (Why Catholic? “The Profession of Faith,” 9-10).
